A record you control, where the decision about where it is kept is made by you rather than for you.

What it does today

• You choose where the record is kept, and you can change your mind later. Kept by us, so it is there on every device you sign in from and survives a lost computer. Or local only, where it lives in your browser on your device and we store nothing at all beyond the fact that you chose that.
• Local only means what it says. Nothing you enter is sent to us, and the app will not switch into that mode while we are still holding anything for you - you take a copy, remove what we hold, and then switch.
• Acquisition and disposition, make, model, calibre, serial number, what you paid, what it is worth now, and where each one is kept.
• There is no passphrase to remember, and never will be. A password you can lose is not protection for somebody who chose the convenient option, it is just a way to lose your own records one day.
• A scrub removes those records permanently. Not hidden, not flagged as deleted: once it has run they cannot be recovered by us, by you, or by anybody restoring an older copy of our systems. It asks you to type the word out before it will run, because nothing else in the app is this final.
• We keep that a scrub happened and when, and nothing whatsoever about what it contained. That is the entire point of it.
• If a record ever cannot be shown to you, the app says so plainly instead of showing you an empty list that looks like everything was deleted.

Why it is built this way

Vault is hosted because a home inventory is only worth keeping if it survives the house. This is the same shape of record with the opposite requirement, and one app trying to serve both would have to get one of them wrong. So the choice is yours and it is reversible, local only genuinely means nothing reaches us, and a scrub is a real ending rather than a hidden row. We would rather hold less of this than more of it.
